Juliana’s expertise lies in communications strategy, visual communications and graphic design. She contributed to the development and implementation of the communications strategy for Rhodes University where she formerly worked as Visual Communications Manager and Acting Director of Communications.
She has developed brand identities and guidelines in the university sector, some of her notable projects have included branding the Rhodes/DST Centre for Nanotechnology Innovation, designing numerous stakeholder targeted publications, designing the Nelson Mandela University Research and Innovation Reports (2016/17 and 2017/18), institutional exhibition display kits, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s 30th Anniversary of Grantmaking in South Africa publication. She also developed branding for the Women’s Academic Solidarity Association and Bergplaas Nature Reserve, which focuses on environmental education.
In addition to leading media and branding training sessions, Juliana has also worked in the university sector as a residence manager, and project officer in equity and Institutional culture. She has a Bachelor of Journalism and Master of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes University.
Heather is an experienced communications specialist, writer, journalist, editor and author. She has written and produced many media articles and features, and stakeholder-targeted research publications and reports, website content, books and other content for universities, businesses, banks, research and development organisations, conservation organisations and NGOs. Her journalist expertise allows her to present complex research concepts and ideas in a manner that is engaging to experts and non-experts alike.
Some of the specialist digital and print publications Heather has written and produced from conception to completion, include the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s 30th Anniversary of Grantmaking in South Africa, WWF-South African and Nedbank’s 25 years of the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, Rhodes University’s Department of Sociology Land Research, Rhodes Business School’s 15 Years of Rhodes Business School, Nelson Mandela University’s Research and Innovation Reports (2016/17 and 2017/18) and Wits University’s Stronger Together development and fundraising publication.
Heather has created and tailored content for a range of websites and is the author of several books. She is a senior contract writer for WITSReview – Wits University’s multiple award-winning alumni magazine, and she regularly writes articles and columns in leading South African news media and magazines.
To empower people to write and communicate, she has contributed to university-wide media training sessions.
Heather has a Bachelor of Journalism Degree from Rhodes University.
